Kobza Vajk<\/strong> <\/span>is an oud player, composer and improviser whose music unfolds at the crossroads of Middle Eastern musical traditions, European early music and contemporary improvisation. Rather than belonging to any single genre, his work inhabits a space where ancient melodies, modal thinking and spontaneous creation converge into a distinctive musical language.<\/span><\/p>\n

Drawing on Persian, Arab, Armenian and Turkish traditions, as well as the sound world of medieval and Renaissance Europe, Vajk has spent more than two decades shaping an artistic voice that is both deeply rooted and unmistakably personal. His instruments\u2014including the oud, ba\u011flama, psaltery, kithara, ektara and the Hungarian koboz\u2014are not treated as historical artefacts but as living companions in an ongoing musical dialogue. Improvisation is central to his practice, allowing each performance to emerge organically from the atmosphere of the moment.<\/span><\/p>\n

His concerts follow the cultural journey of the oud across centuries and civilizations, where echoes of the Eastern Mediterranean meet contemporary composition and original works. The resulting soundscape invites listeners into a contemplative space in which memory, silence and resonance become as significant as melody itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vajk’s artistic path was first inspired by the music of Tunisian oud master Anouar Brahem. He later studied\u2014and subsequently taught\u2014at Hungary’s leading early music academies and festivals. His debut recording, \u0150st\u00e1nc<\/em> (Ancient Dance<\/em>), created with the encouragement of the Liszt Prize-winning violinist, composer and ethnomusicologist Csaba \u00d6kr\u00f6s, was premiered at Budapest’s Pesti Vigad\u00f3 in 2003. In 2023, he received the Hungarian Heritage Award as a member of the distinguished Kecsk\u00e9s Ensemble.<\/span><\/p>\n

With the original Kobza Vajk Group, he helped shape a new direction within Hungarian contemporary folk and oriental music, receiving the Traf\u00f3 Special Prize in 2008. The ensemble reunited in 2024 for a sold-out concert at the House of Music Hungary in Budapest.<\/span><\/p>\n

His performances have taken him to audiences in Ankara, Istanbul, Berlin, Munich, Krak\u00f3w, Vienna and Salon-de-Provence. His music is documented on more than a dozen recordings, each reflecting an enduring search for the timeless through the immediacy of sound.<\/span><\/p>\n
